Irene d'Almeida
Ph.D., Professor, Department of French and Italian

Dr. d'Almeida teaches French language and Francophone African Literature (African Literature in French). Her research centers on Francophone African women writers, and she deals with autobiography, fiction and poetry. Her work is increasingly interdisciplinary. At the moment, she is looking at how globalization is affecting African feminist discourses. She is also reflecting on empire scholarship in relation to "Francophonie," a cultural construct which has profound political, economic and psychological impact on the live of Francophone Africans and on the literature they produce. Her publications include: Francophone African Women Writers: Destroying the Emptiness of Silence (Gainsville: The University of Florida Press, 1994) and Femmes africaines en poésie, [African Women's Poetry (ed.)] (Bremen, Germany, 2001).
