Therese MartinPh.D., Associate Professor, Art History
Dr. Martin is Associate Professor of Medieval Art History in the School of Art. Her research interests focus on Spain in the central Middle Ages, particularly patronage of architecture by royal women in the Kingdom of León-Castilla. Among her publications is a book entitled Queen as King: Politics and Architectural Propaganda in Twelfth-Century Spain (Leiden, 2006), which uses as a case study the palatine complex of San Isidoro, León. This site, comprised of church, palace, double monastery, and pilgrim's hospital, provides a wide scope for interdisciplinary research. Her book addresses the ways in which women wielded power in the early twelfth century, contrasting queens-regnant with queen consorts.
